Title1 Selected

Tout Quarry, Isle of Portland, Dorset, England.

I attended a one-week stone-carving workshop based in the Tout Quarry, ran by the Portland Sculpture Trust.
This was my first introduction to carving. I worked under a canopy in the heart of the old quarry but essentially outdoors, surrounded by the elements - the expanse of the sea, sky and stone. Portland Stone is an oolitic limestone 135 million years old, and it is thought to be a receptive stone to directly carve into, but extremely durable. I quickly found out how physical a task it was to make an impression on my chosen piece. On subsequent courses I wore an arm brace so that I could focus on the carving rather than the pain in my arm. This workshop was a really valuable experience, and encouraged me to explore other carving opportunities.
