The theme of the caryatid has been a subject that I have worked with for many years. It was initially inspired by two bronze sculptures created by Rodin. These were sited on the terrace of the Musee Rodin in Paris that I saw in ’88, and I photographed them in the round, and designed my own version. I thought the languid posture and the tilted head rather beautiful, but I altered the positioning of the arms and legs into a more angular composition, mainly to eliminate the gaps and to create a compact form that helps building the large hollow form produced by the coiling technique. Also the stylised forms of Modigliani’s caryatids appealed to me very much, with the clean lines and edge qualities.
